With deep sorrow, we mourn the passing of Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza, a scholar, visionary leader, and devoted servant of his faith and community. Dr. Mirza’s life was a reflection of sincerity, taqwā, and a steadfast commitment to advancing causes that uplifted the community.
Born in Karachi and blessed with an exceptional intellect, he pursued advanced degrees in physics and education before dedicating his career to building ethical, Islamically-grounded institutions. As founder and President of Sterling Management Group, and through his guidance of many nonprofit and educational initiatives, he championed halal, principled financial development long before it was widely recognized.
Dr. Mirza’s dedication, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment were instrumental not only in the development of the International Institute of Islamic Thought, but also in ensuring its long-term sustainability as a global center for Islamic scholarship, intellectual renewal, and educational reform.
Dr. Mirza was also a mentor to countless students, professionals, and community leaders. His work—particularly in Islamic wealth ethics and institution-building—was rooted in the Quranic values of integrity, ihsān, and trustworthiness. His book Five Pillars of Prosperity remains a source of guidance for Muslims seeking to align their financial lives with their faith.
Known for his humility, generosity, and gentle character, Dr. Mirza exemplified the prophetic tradition of quiet service. His legacy will continue through the institutions he helped build, the people he inspired, and the sadaqah jāriyah he leaves behind.
May Allah forgive his shortcomings, expand his grave, illuminate it with light, and grant him the highest ranks of Jannat al-Firdaws. May He also grant patience and comfort to his family and all who were blessed to know him.
