The 2025 Journal of Education in Muslim Societies (JEMS) Writing Workshop was held on Dec. 5-7, 2025, in partnership with Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, on the theme of “How can Education in Muslim Societies Respond to Global Humanitarian Crises?” Twelve participants from diverse countries attended the workshop, including Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Palestine, Tunisia, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, Canada, and Türkiye. The objective of the workshop was to guide participants in preparing their academic papers for peer review and publication. The workshop co-directors were Dr. Ilham Nasser and Prof. Nuraan Davids, who are also the co-editors of JEMS.

The workshop opened with a keynote address by Dr. Mujadad Zaman, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education and Humanities Unit, at Boğaziçi University. Titled, “The Aporia of Anxiety: The Purpose of Education in the Age of Environmental Collapse,” Dr. Zaman explained that the purpose of education is to stand on one’s feet morally and intellectually – not to find a job and buy a house. The classical understanding of learning was that the more you know, the more you become, to find who you are and to have the freedom to grow into an optimal human being. Unfortunately, education today makes individuals more individualistic rather than enabling humans to become more humane. He urged people to approach education in a way that adds meaning to our lives and empowers us to live and engage with the world authentically.

Dr. Zaman’s speech was followed by academic writing principles sessions, focused on the various components of a published article, such as an overview of academic writing skills and the writing of the literature review, methods, and results. These sessions started with short presentations by the workshop organizers, along with paired and independent work, which allowed participants not only to give and receive feedback from their peers but also to spend time improving the respective sections of their papers. In the end, the participants also had one-on-one sessions with the JEMS co-editors and the book review editor, Dr. Isra Brifkani. Huda Kamareddine, the managing editor, shared guidelines for the participants to submit their final papers to JEMS for review. Ms. Kamareddine, along with Saulat Pervez, researcher at IIIT, were the lead on the organizational details of the workshop.

The Aporia of Anxiety

The Purpose of Education in the age of Environmental Collapse

If education is the most ‘natural’ thing we do, then its greatest test is to answer how we live in an age which suffers, in proportion, from a potential collapse due to human life. This existential miasma is also an effect towards the self and other, towards what is and can potentially be. Can education, comprehend as well as apprehend this growing concern? Such issues frame the focus of the Keynote address with the aim of drawing out practical implications for educators.
