Editorial Standards

Purpose of the Catalogue

The TEFQI Public Domain Literature Library exists to provide readers with free access to out-of-copyright fiction and to offer editorial commentary that illuminates each work's language, structure, and themes. The catalogue is not a scholarly edition nor a commercial venture; it is a curated reading guide rooted in the catalogue project's engagement with the texts.

Scope and Selection

The library currently contains 97 works of English-language fiction, primarily from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Selections are drawn from Project Gutenberg's corpus and reflect a preference for novels and stories that reward close reading. No attempt has been made to represent every author or genre proportionally.

Source Attribution

All texts are sourced from Project Gutenberg. The editorial notes are original to this library and are signed by the catalogue project. The catalogue does not assert independent verification of the texts' public-domain status beyond Project Gutenberg's assertions.

Bibliographic Records

Each entry includes the title, author(s), originating publisher, subject keywords from Library of Congress cataloguing, and a target-reader indication. The editorial note is separate from the bibliographic data and represents the catalogue project's interpretive commentary.

Category Assignment

Works are assigned to one of four thematic categories: Exploration Survival Adventure Tales; Fairy Tales Myths Imaginary Worlds; Science Fiction Utopias; and Historical Psychological Social Fiction. These categories are flexible guides, not definitive classifications. A work may fit multiple categories, but only one is assigned for browsing convenience.

Editorial Reading Context

The editorial notes are based on a reading of the excerpts supplied by Project Gutenberg, not necessarily the full work. Notes focus on observable features such as diction, dialogue, narrative structure, recurring imagery, and thematic tensions. the catalogue project does not claim exhaustive or definitive interpretation.

Edition Facts and Text Measurements

No textual measurements or edition comparisons are provided. The catalogue notes do not analyse variant editions or textual history, as such information is beyond the scope of this project.

Recommendations and Related Works

Each category includes three recommended titles with specific reasons. These recommendations are the catalogue project's personal choices and are not based on popularity, sales, or external validation. Readers are encouraged to explore beyond the recommendations.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
